TxDOT I-10 Widening
Features & Highlights
- 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ’s Self-perform concrete pavement will replace existing asphalt.
- Widens 7.5 miles of I-10, improving capacity, operation, circulation, and safety.
Project Overview
The I-10 widening broke ground at the end of May 2022 and is a key piece of the puzzle for recent infrastructure changes in the city of El Paso. The need for this widening is due to a bottleneck in traffic that reaches the New Mexico/Texas state line. The widening will improve the traffic flow from the state line all the way through downtown El Paso.
Expected to take three years, the reconstruction is a $174 million build for 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ and highlights 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ’s self-perform concrete capability. The project team will widen 7.5 miles of the I-10 from Antonio Street to Mesa Street, improving capacity, operation, circulation, and safety. Self-perform concrete pavement will replace the existing asphalt, and the team will add additional inside lanes in each direction, auxiliary lanes between ramps, a new overpass, replace 25 mainline bridges, and add lighting and an intelligent traffic system (ITS).
51¹ú²úÊÓƵ adapted to the needs of the city of El Paso, coordinating with TxDOT so that lane restrictions are as minimal as possible; residents have full freeway access during the busiest parts of the day– morning and evening rush hour.
51¹ú²úÊÓƵ’s project team have worked together on El Paso highway improvements for seven years. They travelled from the El Paso Go-10 and I-10 Connect projects, making for a well-oiled machine to tackle this last piece of I-10 traffic flow in El Paso.
