Project Overview

The initial phase of the San Pedro Creek Culture Park included reconstructing .5 miles of the existing creek into a world-class urban linear park. This flood control project removed land and structures from the 100-year-old floodplain by widening and lowering the creek. Additionally, the project restores the ecosystem that once lived in the creek, improves water quality, acts as a catalyst for economic development, and pays tribute to the birthplace of Bexar County and 300 years of history.

The project team knew they would be dealing with excessive rainfall, and they came up with a plan during preconstruction. The planned system was tested in August 2017 when 4 inches of rain fell in four hours leaving part of the site under 11 feet of water. With the team鈥檚 innovative system in place, the water was pumped out by the next morning and crews were back at work a day later. Without the system in place, work would have been shut down for almost a week.

The project had an aggressive schedule; it had to be completed for the City of San Antonio鈥檚 300th anniversary. The project team successfully delivered, and the grand opening of the new San Pedro Creek Culture Park occurred alongside the city鈥檚 300th anniversary celebration on May 5, 2018.
