Project Overview
The San Bernardino Juvenile Detention and Assessment facility includes a 42,765-square-foot administration and warehouse building and a 280-bed detention complex built in 14 identical modules totaling 88,572 square feet. The facility鈥檚 campus-style arrangement includes offices, an operations center, kitchen and dining areas, a library, conference and classrooms, weapons vault, medical clinic, secured storage and a warehouse with load dock. At 9.7 acres, the site is also equipped with a state-of-the-art security system, which exceeds Federal Prison requirements.
From programming studies to final design, we used BIM technology to explain development approaches, construction sequences and configuration of building materials. As the client gained an understanding of these factors, they were able to better evaluate their options, including associated cost and time impacts.
This accelerated effort helped to reduce project cost contingencies, reduced final production time after contract award and virtually eliminated construction conflicts for the entire team. During the final documentation phase, the use of BIM and clash detection sessions by the entire design-build team further reduced potential construction delays. Altogether, project design and construction were completed on budget and within 22 months, six full months faster than the client鈥檚 original schedule.
