Project Overview

The Maple Street Correctional Center was designed using an innovative approach to corrections: to stop the revolving door of individuals in and out of jail. The goal of the facility is to reduce the recidivism rate by preparing inmates through training programs and counseling. The modern facility has features like extensive natural light and classrooms as well as computer and food preparation training areas.

The project, completed by 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ and a joint venture partner, included remediation of a brownfield site, demolition of existing structures and on- and off-site improvements to prepare the 4.8-acre site for development of the new 260,000-square-foot complex. The facility has 832 beds, support spaces, a natural, light-filled visitor lobby, video visitation area, full-service kitchen, locker rooms, staff dining with outdoor eating area, laundry facility and loading docks.

One of the many unique features of the center is a separate area of 88 beds for work furlough inmates. Those inmates are allowed to leave the facility during the day for work, school or training, and are housed separately from the general population.

Additional spaces, including a culinary training kitchen, dog training program and computer labs, were built to support inmate programming options. Recreation spaces, including ping-pong, a rooftop recreation yard and surround-sound, big-screen TVs, were added to reward inmates’ good behavior. Visitation at the facility includes video capabilities and a children’s area to makes kids and families feel safe and welcome.
