Project Overview

This large joint-venture project included complete reconstruction and widening of nearly 6 miles of Interstate 10 through the downtown corridor of Tucson, from Prince Road to 29th Street, while maintaining traffic flow. It included 16 new bridges and traffic interchange improvements, asphalt and concrete pavement, roadway excavation, drainage culverts, retaining walls, lighting, landscaping, freeway management system, public art and public relations. It was also completed several months ahead of schedule.

In order to prepare the freeway for major construction and keep traffic flowing, a complicated freeway management system was installed and extra lanes were added to the access roads to allow local traffic to move freely between exit ramp roads, which were closed from Prince Road to the I-19 interchange for the duration of the project. The FMS was controlled by the use of traffic cameras, and signaling adjustments to allow for changes during peak periods.
