Project Overview
The G. Michael Hoover KAPBCS Training Center is the home of 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ’s rapidly expanding workforce development programs. The Training Center reflects the effort that 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ is making internally to invest in building the skills and success of our valued craft employee-owners.
The training center was built from the ground up with the hard work of dedicated, skilled 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ employee-owners. Concrete crews formed and placed all concrete throughout the Center for Craft Excellence and the main building, including foundations, slabs, curbs, sidewalks, driveways and drainage structures. The concrete teams also planned and managed the installation of the aesthetic exterior work of the polished concrete floors. 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ’s Transportation Group took care of all the sitework, including installing underground storm drainage, sewage, water, fire piping and rough and final grading. Teams from the Building Group managed construction as well as the design-build contract with Architekton, the architect firm. For the finishing touches, the Building Group, along with 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ’s Facilities Management department and Talent Development team collaborated on the design and procurement of the building’s new technology, furnishings, and decor. 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ apprentices also contributed, with students in the welding classes building the welding booths that their future peers will get to use for hands-on learning.
The complex hosts the Center for Craft Excellence (C4CE), home to 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ’s national NCCER certified program. The C4CE will give employee-owners a state-of-the-art facility for skill development classes and continuing education courses. There are a number of both indoor and covered outdoor lab spaces on site, and two hybrid classrooms for in-person and virtual events. The center also has a 200-person auditorium with advanced AV/teleconference capability, two 6 x 12-foot LED video walls, a catering kitchen and pre-function space for conferences and events. The outdoor space consists of a 7,500-square-foot pre-engineered canopy with HLVS fans and power for tools and equipment used for hands-on vocational training. The 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ team worked seamlessly with the architect to develop a clean but bold aesthetic using upgraded metal siding, high-quality glass, and a pop of 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ red with glazed tile. Several large heritage trees were preserved around the site, along with a variety of newly planted trees and desert-hardy plants.
